About Our Shed & How to Join
Established in 2015
MEN in Sheds Lancing & Sompting was established to provide a dedicated, supportive environment where adults can gather, create, and connect. Located in the grounds of Manor Park, our Shed serves as a vital community hub addressing loneliness, life transitions, retirement, and practical skill sharing.
Our journey began in 2015 when local volunteers recognized the need for a hands-on community space in the Adur district. We owe our early beginnings to our very first landlords, Julie and Howard Attwater, who generously let us use their double garage in Grinstead Lane as our very first Shed.
In 2019, through the dedicated efforts of our then Chairman Jock, and with the fantastic support of local councillors Carol and Carson Albury, we secured an unused council building at Manor Park to serve as our new permanent home.
Thanks to the sterling work carried out throughout the lockdown period by Shed Manager Frank King and Shedder Martin Ireson, who put his skills as an electrician to great use; and others the Barn was completely transformed and readied for our members. Through local fundraising, tool donations, and tireless volunteer effort, we turned the site into a fully functional workshop equipped for timber crafts, repairs, and social connection.
Prioritising Health & Wellbeing
Retirement, bereavement, or health changes can lead to isolation. Men often talk shoulder-to-shoulder while working on a shared project rather than face-to-face in formal settings. By engaging in practical tasks, members build meaningful friendships, stay active, maintain mental wellbeing, and share a sense of purpose.
